Symptoms of Early Pregnancy - What You Need to Know

By: Hollie Swapp

The symptoms of early pregnancy can start right from when the sperm enters the egg into the first trimester. However, the symptoms vary from woman to woman. Some may never have any, while for others the body will keep on giving hints to your new condition.

The following are some of the symptoms of early pregnancy, which are most common:

Missing a Period: Missed a period is usually the first indication of pregnancy. Although some pregnant women may still experience bleeding, typically from 1-2 weeks after conception. This is caused by fertilized egg attaching itself to the uterus or uterine wall. This phenomenon is called as implantation bleeding.

However, just because you missed a period, does not necessarily mean pregnancy. This may also be due to emotional stress or other physical reasons.

Frequent Urination: Due to physical changes and hormonal imbalances, a pregnant woman has a frequent need to urinate. This usually occurs 2-3 weeks after conception and continues throughout the gestational period.

Swollen Breasts and Sensitive Nipples: Swollen and tender breasts with very sensitive nipples are also very common symptoms during the first trimester. You breasts may feel bloated and heavier than usual. Again, this usually occurs 1-2 weeks after conception. Skin and Nipple Color Change: Deepening of the areolas (the circle surrounding the nipple), and darkening of certain areas of skin like the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, etc., in the weeks after conception (first trimester) are common. These changes occur due to the different pregnancy hormones that are secreted by the body.

Fatigue: You may feel that no matter how much rest you get, it is still not enough for your body. You will probably feel tired and exhausted. This occurs due to changes in hormone level in the body. Fortunately after the first couple months, this goes away.

Increased Body Temperature: There is an increase in your basal body temperature in the following weeks after ovulation. This usually persists throughout pregnancy.

Bloating: You will most likely experience a bloated abdomen with about a one pound per month of weight gain. This usually occurs in the first trimester and is due to hormonal changes rather than baby formation. You will notice that your waistline is disappearing.

Cramping: Abdominal cramps occur more frequently in pregnant women. The uterus will contract regularly and often. Even small exercises, like walking can cause the cramps.

Nausea and vomiting: Nausea and vomiting, commonly referred to as "morning sickness" is one of the common symptoms of early pregnancy that is seen in most pregnant women. This can occur in any time of the day and typically starts in the 6th week after conception. This may occur earlier in some cases.

Pregnant women also tend to have an increased sensitivity to smell. Certain smells may seem more sensitive than others, and this can also lead to nausea and vomiting.

There are few things worse than heartburn. Constant heartburn and a burning sensation in the esophagus. Unfortunately, I was allowed to endure this suffering in pregnancy And therefore knows exactly what I'm talking about. You cannot lie in bed at night and can go straight to sleep because there's always this hochkrabbelt liquid in your throat. There are several ways you can get rid of heartburn during pregnancy or at least diminish it a little.

* Tip 1: So, from my own experience I can say that milk is a good recipe for heartburn. At least for a while.

* Tip 3: Avoid coffee and carbonated beverages, especially with meals. Otherwise it will not be long until the acid reflux occurs again.

* Tip 5: If you feel heartburn coming on once again, you should resort to a dry slice of bread.
* Tip 6: Avoid greasy food like pizza, fries, sausage and Co.
* Tip 7: Try constant chewing on peeled almonds or hazelnuts to neutralize the acid.
* Tip 8: From personal experience I can recommend half a teaspoon medium hot mustard.

Massage during Pregnancy

By: Dr. Paul Eckley

First of all, it just makes sense. Massage therapy during pregnancy is appropriate for tight muscles that are in partial spasm and are producing aching (or sometimes sharp) pain. Stiffness is often present as well. What pregnant woman doesn't experience this at some point? The muscles are fatigued from working harder while carrying more weight in increasingly awkward positions. And if you have a history of musculoskeletal pain before becoming pregnant, you are more likely to have it during those 9 months.

Now for the first thing you probably didn't know:

Massage therapy may be covered by your health insurance. Some insurance policies cover it. Some don't. It depends on whether it it considered a "covered benefit." And it has to be performed at a healthcare provider's office who is a participating provider for your health insurance company.

Massage during pregnancy is performed mostly in the side lying position with the use of supporting pillows.

Is it worth the time and trouble to go to a massage therapist during pregnancy?

Absolutely. Massage relieves pain and stiffness. It is a natural healthcare method which relieves the effects of stress and promotes relaxation. Massage makes life easier during daily activities, but it also:

1) Prepares the pelvis for an easier pregnancy and birth with better muscle tone
2) Decreases abnormal tension of the muscles supporting the uterus which can cause problems such as abnormal fetal position at birth - especially important if you feel pulling or straining in the abdomen while stretching
3) Minimizes likelihood of medical intervention with drugs and surgery

Something else you may not know:

Chiropractic care using the Activator Method is a great complement to prenatal massage. Activator Method combined with massage melts away muscle tension like nothing else.

With the Activator Method there is "no cracking, popping or twisting" associated with traditional chiropractic treatment methods. Instead, a hand held instrument called an Activator uses a controlled, fast thrust which is comfortable for patients.

And chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe. Results from a soon to be published study involving several hundred pregnant women receiving chiropractic care indicated no adverse effects. The only complications were slight soreness after the first treatment in a handful of patients which was was resolved by the second visit. These research results were initially presented by Dr. Jeanne Ohm, a chiropractic researcher and instructor (who is also in private practice) at the American College of Nurse Midwives annual meeting in Boston, May 2008.

Here are some recommended action steps if you want to receive massage and/or Activator Method chiropractic care while pregnant:

• check to see if massage therapy is a covered benefit of your health insurance plan. The front desk staff at a healthcare provider's office can help you with this.
• do a Google search using the terms "massage" and the name of your community; or "massage" and "chiropractic" to find providers near you.
visit the website www.Activator.com to find a chiropractor near you who is proficient in the Activator Method.

Massage during pregnancy is helpful for most women. When combined with Activator Method chiropractic care, it is even more effective at making life easier while pregnant, including making delivery safer.

Dr. Paul Eckley, DC is a chiropractor in Walled Lake, Michigan with 25 years of experience in the Activator Method combined with massage therapy. He can be contacted at drpauleckley@att.net or 248-960-0520. His website is www.CommunityChiroWellness.com

What do I need to get for a New Baby

By: Jane Hull

If you are getting organised and deciding what do I need for a new baby, you will need to buy lots of equipment which can be expensive. The best thing is to make a list of items, starting with the essentials and then working down to the ‘nice to haves’. I would suggest the first purchase is the pram; it is likely to be the most expensive and the most difficult to choose. Prams can range from a few hundred pounds to nearer a thousand. If you go along to a nursery shop that actually has the items you can see them and try pushing them around to try them out. You can always look around to see if you can get the one you like somewhere else, online, for example.

When you are deciding what do I need for a new baby, the other large purchase is the car seat; this could be part of the pram travel system or on its own depending on what you prefer. The third item is the cot, it is again likely to be expensive and you can choose between a cot bed which will convert to a bed and last longer than a normal cot.

Once you have chosen these larger items you can start to think, what do I need for a new baby in terms of smaller, less expensive items? Clothing, nappies, nappy bag, change mat, bouncy chair, breast pump, bottles, breast pads, the list is endless. Within these items you have other choices to make such as do I want to use disposable or reusable nappies. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, if you choose disposable it can be very expensive as babies get through a lot of nappies, they are not very good for the environment and babies can be allergic to them as they have plastic in them. If you choose reusable, it can be very expensive outlay but once you have bought them long term it saves money. You need more equipment to soak them and wash them, it can be a lot of washing and work and they sometimes can leak.

When you are thinking, what do I need for a new baby, you must remember that people are likely to buy you presents for the baby and these may cover some of the items that you have on your list. You might find that someone may lend or give you items second hand which could save loads of money.

The main thing when you are deciding what do I need for a new baby is that you get the basics and other things you can always wait and see if you get them or buy them after you have had the baby. Of course once you have had the baby you might decide that you don’t need them after all.

I have children myself and I write about products and tips which are useful to parents, they cover making life less fuss and more fun, saving time and getting out and about with young babies and children. Some of my articles are interesting but they try to have a bit of fun and laughter about them.

5 Things You Can Do to Get Pregnant Faster

By: Kate Kate

Congratulations on deciding to plan for a new baby. To increase your chances of becoming pregnant quickly and naturally, try these five things today.

1. Start a preconception journal. To boost your probability of conceiving, you need some essential pieces of information about your unique fertility. Use your journal to track your periods, including when they start, how long they last, and how many days pass between cycles. Also keep a record of the days you think you are ovulating and the times you and your partner make love. This important information will be valuable for your doctor or midwife should you have trouble conceiving quickly.

2. Make an appointment with your OBgyn - Don't wait until you see positive on a pregnancy test to call your doctor. A pre pregnancy visit can increase your chances of pregnancy by allowing your health care provider to test you for possible conception concerns before they arise. She can also answer questions you may have about trying to get pregnant and suggest prenatal vitamins and a diet plan that may help you get pregnant faster.

3. Drink enough water. Your body makes cervical mucus each cycle that protects sperm and moves them through your cervix to the awaiting egg. If you are chronically dehydrated, your body may stop making cervical mucus and your ability to get pregnant may be decreased. To raise your odds of conception, drink plent of water to so that your natural reproductive system can perform optimally.

4 Don't smoke and eat right. If you are a smoker, now is the time to quit. Cigarettes impair your body's ability to metabolize estrogen, which is very important hormone for conception. And if you get pregnant and continue to smoke, the poisons you ingest could harm your developing baby.

If you are under or over weight, you can increase your chances of getting pregnant by maintaining a healthy weight for your age and body type. Weight and fertility are definitely related. Being over weight or under weight also effects the delicate balance of estrogen in your system which may make it harder for you to get pregnant.

5. Make love! Well that's obvious, right? Unfortunately, many hopeful parents-to-be aren't having enough intercourse at the right times to conceive a baby naturally and quickly. Once you have ovulated, the timeframe for conception is only a number of hours, probably no more then 24. If you are waiting to make love until ovulation, it may be too late! Sperm can live and remain potent in your fallopian tubes for 3 to 5 days. To increase your chances of getting pregnant, your egg should be released to already waiting sperm. Have sexual intercourse daily (or at every other day) in the four to five days leading up to ovulation and one to two days after as well. If you aren't sure when you are ovulating, learn more about your signs of fertility or consider using an ovulation detector kit.

Try these five things today for healthy head start towards getting pregnant with the baby of your dreams naturally and quickly. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 9 months!

Infertility treatments and what they are all about

By: Daphnis Hughes

Infertility is a reproductive system condition which impairs conception. Additionally, women who get pregnant but then suffer miscarriages are also considered infertile. A survey has shown that one in every six couples has trouble getting pregnant. Although some causes of infertility cannot be treated it is now possible for women to become pregnant courtesy of assisted reproductive technology and many other procedures used as part of infertility treatment in fertility centers.
Infertility Treatments range from fertility drugs, surgery, artificial insemination, or the assisted reproductive technology, and some of these treatments are normally combined. Doctors normally recommend a specific infertility treatment based on test results, how long a couple has been trying to get pregnant, age of both the man and woman, overall health of the partners, and the preferences of the partners.

In cases where infertility in women is caused by ovulation disorders, fertility drugs are normally the main form of infertility treatment used. The medication is normally used to either induce or regulate ovulation and they work just like the natural hormones i.e. the follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and the luteinizing hormone (LH) to trigger ovulation.

Some of the fertility drugs commonly used include Clomiphene Citrate tablet which is taken orally and used to regulate the quality and timing of ovulation so as to increase the chances of conception. This fertility drug is especially useful for women with irregular menstrual cycles.
The FSH and HMG are injectable drugs administered to stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple follicles. These injectable infertility treatments are also used for in vitro fertilization IVF to help women who have not successfully conceived after using the Clomiphene Citrate tablet.

The Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is another injectable drug which mimics the natural LH surge. This causes the maturation and ovulation of mature eggs from the ovary.

Progesterone is another commonly used infertility treatment. It is available in form of intramuscular injection or vaginal suppository. It is usually administered when the ovulation process is complete. Progesterone affects the uterus lining to make it more receptive for implantation. However, if the conservative infertility treatments do not work, a physician may suggest the patient to undergo assisted reproductive technology techniques like IVF or zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT).

Causes of infertility vary greatly as there are different components of the reproductive system. These components must work in sync for conception and full term pregnancy to take place. If you have been trying to conceive for a while and you are unable to, take the initiative to visit a fertility center which has reputable specialists who will advise you on the best infertility treatment that will increase your chances of conception.

Egg Donation: A review

By: Daphnis Hughes

Childbirth is something that most women look forward to. Sadly, not all women are lucky to have this extraordinary experience and so it is quite a noble cause for any woman to donate eggs. Egg donation has made it possible for women to become pregnant even when they lack eggs of their own or when their eggs are of poor quality. This is commonly used for women who have unsuccessfully gone through multiple cycles of in vitro fertilization (IVF), women with ovarian failure, or women who are over forty-three years.
For an individual to be able to donate eggs one must undergo medical screening, be psychologically evaluated, and will be required to sign a legal contract. In addition, for a person to donate eggs there are some requirements which must be met. You need to be between the ages of 21 – 31 years although one can still donate eggs at the age of 34 if the eggs are of high quality. Secondly, the weight of the donor should be proportional to the height; the donor should neither be overweight nor underweight. Thirdly, the family health background is checked for any hereditary diseases. The egg donor should also have a regular menstruation cycle and should not have any complications of infertility. Moreover, the egg donor should be committed to the egg donation process - she should take proper care of herself at the time of treatment. Further, no woman should donate eggs on more than six occasions in her lifetime.

The Egg Donation process requires that the components of a single IVF cycle be divided between the donor and the intended mother. The egg donor undergoes the initial steps of IVF which include the ovarian stimulation and egg removal, while the intended mother undergoes the embryo transfer. For the egg donation process to be successful the cycles of both women must be synchronized and this is done through a combination of birth control pills and Lupron. Once the cycle begins the egg donor is administered with the medication required for a standard IVF cycle. Meanwhile, the intended mother takes a combination of estrogen and progesterone to prepare her uterine wall for implantation. When the donor’s eggs are mature they are retrieved using the standard trans-vaginal ultrasound-guide method. The sperm is then provided by the intended mother’s male partner and fertilization takes place.

Some of the side effects associated with egg donation include nausea, headache, bloated feeling, and temporary weight gain due to hormonal imbalance. These side effects are due to the medication given to the donor to help her produce enough eggs during ovulation. Ensure you get enough information before undergoing this process.

Experience The World In a More Baby Friendly Way

By: Robin Johnson

The beating of mother's heart, the gurgling of her tummy, the murmur of voices. These are all noises that soothe a newborn baby. Sounds that have been captured and played through speakers of pricey equipment. Don't be another victim of baby boutique-itis. I will admit I have been lured by the cuteness of baby products that I see, that I never knew of 10 seconds ago and suddenly I need it. I'm quickly put in my place when I see the price tag. The reality is that baby really only needs two main things, a warm body and mother's milk.

To achieve the closeness babies really need, you would need to hold them all of the time. In the first few days of motherhood bliss it may seem like you will never put your baby down. Reality is sure to hit soon after. Those dishes in the sink aren't going to clean themselves, and your cats hair balls are beginning to resemble tumbleweeds in a barren desert. Your arms may be getting stronger but it is a slow process. It's funny how 8lbs of baby in the morning feels more like a 50lb bag of potatoes in your tired arms at night.

So what if there was a way to hold your baby close to your heart and mop the floor? Would it surprise you if I told you it was possible? It's not some new fangled idea or product, people all over the world have been doing it for centuries. It is often referred to as baby wearing or baby slinging. Cultures all over have different ways of wearing their babies but they all use the same principle of using some type of material that is tied, wrapped, or sewn in one way or another creating a baby sling. This frees up your hands for anything else and also helps to distribute the babies weight. If there was anyway to make washing dishes more fun it would sure include being able to see and feel baby resting on your chest.

Baby slings are so cost affective and take up very little room in your diaper bag. Quality slings usually range in price from about thirty dollars to about a hundred and twenty dollars. If you use a baby sling to its full potential it can replace all kinds of pricey baby equipment. No more bouncer, swing, stroller, and no carrying a bulky detachable car seat where ever you go. Even if you don't plan on carrying your baby all the time it is still a good idea to have one for going grocery shopping, going to the beach, and the park with an older child. Have you ever attempted pushing your stroller in the sand? Well I have and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Chasing a toddler is so much easier if you have a sling because you wont have to leave baby behind in a stroller to catch big brother or sister. Some brilliant person (probably a mom) even came up with water slings so you can have baby comforted in your arms while you take them wading (no swimming please) in the pool.

If you want to be able to enjoy your baby to the fullest and you don't have a maid I strongly suggest you look into a baby sling that would suit your needs and style. When you have a sling you will quickly learn that it makes the world a much more baby friendly place.

Robin Johnson is the author. She is a mother, and a driving force to make baby wearing more popular. She is passionate about baby slings and making sure they are safe. If you have any question she would love to answer them. View her hand picked selection of the best baby slings at http://www.babyslingsNthings.com

Useful Information About IVF Treatment in Australia

By: James Daniel

Most women spend the majority of their adult lives taking appropriate measures to avoid pregnancy. Yet these days, more and more women trying to conceive in their 30s are turning to IVF treatment to help them achieve that dream.

In the 30 years since Candice Reed, Australia’s first IVF baby was born, assisted conception has come a long way. To think in 1978, two years prior to Candice Reed’s birth, the chances of an embryo turning into a successful pregnancy through IVF treatment was about 2%. Now, IVF is so common there is one child in every Australian classroom conceived through IVF treatment, and the IVF success rate is up to 55 – 60% per IVF cycle.

Societal changes in the last three decades have altered the way we think about families, careers, travel, and the way we go about choosing a partner to settle down with. There are more options and choices available for both men and women, and unlike generations before them, they are more likely to have several long term relationships before they find their life partner – sometimes not until they are well into their 30s. This age predicament leaves thousands of Australian couples every year facing the prospect of IVF treatment.

In today’s celebrity society of 40+ aged mums, there is a common misconception that trying to get pregnant in your 40s is easy, common and natural. IVF treatment is too often referred to as the ‘back up’ if by 40 years of age natural pregnancy hasn’t occurred. In fact, a woman’s age is the number one factor affecting a couple’s chance of getting pregnant. Every woman is born with a finite number of eggs and the number of eggs decline each month with a woman’s menstrual cycle, most significantly after the age of 37 years. Some tests, such as the Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) blood test will predict the number of eggs available, and this can be helpful for couples in deciding whether to go down the IVF treatment path. Despite this, there is no way of predicting the quality of eggs, or no way to improve the quality of the eggs, both of which also decline with a woman’s age and will impact a woman’s ability to get pregnant - either naturally or through IVF.

In a woman’s natural menstrual cycle, approximately 20 eggs will be produced, but only one egg reaches maturity (that is, it is able to be fertilized). In IVF treatment, the woman’s ovaries are ‘stimulated’ with the use of hormone mediations to grow more than one egg to maturity, so they can be collected and fertilized with the partner’s sperm in vitro, incubated in the laboratory for two to five days, and then one resultant embryo is transferred back to the woman’s uterus.

Factors that will influence the outcome of the IVF treatment include both partner’s ages, how long they have been trying to conceive, whether either partner has been a parent previously, prior fertility treatment undertaken, and how well the eggs and sperm are likely to fertilise and develop into good quality embryos. So when it comes to IVF success, the advice from the experts is the earlier you start thinking and planning your fertility future, the better.

The costs of ivf treatment differs depending on a variety of factors including whether you undertaken fertility treatment using anartificial insemination donor. Please visit www.mivf.com.au to learn more.

6 Reasons to Invest in a Baby Sling

By: Robin Johnson

There are three very different opinions mothers have about baby slings. There are those who have never heard about slings and never tried them. There are those who have tried them but didn't get the full effect of them because either they didn't have the right kind or the right size or they just were not using them correctly. Then there are the ones who are die hard fans of baby slings and they couldn't imagine life without it. Where do you fit in? No matter what category you fall into here are six great reasons to learn about, reconsider, or brush up on your knowledge of slings.

Extra set of Arms- Ever wish you had four arms instead of two? A baby slings allows you to hold close to you without actually using your hands. You are free to multi task. Go Anywhere- A sling makes you and your baby one unit like when you where pregnant. You can go pretty much anywhere you did when you were pregnant with out a bulky stroller or tired arms weighing you down. Space Saver- There is nothing that you will find that folds up smaller than a piece of material. You can fold it in any way and it is not going to take up much room in the diaper bag. Pregnancy Old Wives Tales

By: William Delaney

Old Wives’ Tales…..Can it really kick start labor?
The moment I saw the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, I was ready to become a mommy. I daydreamed about all things baby related. How would I decorate the nursery? Would it be a boy or a girl? Would the baby look like me or my husband? Needless to say I was anxious to get to 40 weeks and start the mommy journey.
At the end of my third trimester I started to research "old wives’ tales" on how to induce labor. I was ready to meet my little girl and I was willing to try some bizarre things I read online.
The "old wives’ tales" were endless! Eggplant parmesan, caster oil, walking, swinging, sex, etc. Game on! But how did I get to this point of depression? It didn’t happen over night and it wasn’t without reason. Here is my story on why I tried these crazy tales and what everyone wants to know…did it work?
Texas heat + Pregnancy – Patience= Ready to be done!
Huge, hot and pregnant! I endured one of the hottest Texas summers during my pregnancy. I would break a sweat just putting my socks on. Every day I would look at the weather hoping for rain but my hopes were crushed when the extended forecast read 100 and up!
I spent the entire summer secluded indoors. Being an active person, this was torture. I longed for the days of playing volleyball, going for walks or even a little retail therapy. But the thought of getting out of the A/C to waddle to the car was daunting. Unless I was going to the pool, I didn’t want to step foot out of the house.
Not only was I hot but I was uncomfortable! I had heartburn, indigestion, back pain and swelling! All of these factors combined made me even more anxious to go into labor. All of these symptoms would finally be a thing of the past and the best part of all; I would finally get to meet my baby girl.
My doctor gave me the option of being induced and I jumped at the opportunity. I had an official countdown to D-day. With the passing of each day I was one step closer to the end. I had the nursery complete, my hospital bag packed, and family on high alert. If this weren’t enough I deep cleaned my house and my husband even shampooed the carpets. We were ready!
The night before my induction my husband and I celebrated our last night with just the two of us. We went out to eat and spent the night talking about becoming a mom and dad and greeting our baby girl. We got home and set our alarms extra early, not that I needed an alarm to wake up. I didn’t sleep more than 3 hours! It was like the night before Christmas. I thought about what she would look like, how the labor would go and I envisioned our family and friends congratulating us and sharing our joy.
As soon as the clock hit 6:30 am I called the hospital like my doctor instructed to let them know that I was ready to get the show on the road. I expected a quick call saying "see you in 20 minutes". Imagine my surprise when the nurse said "I’m sorry Miss, can you call back in an hour?" I was down but not out.
My husband and I showered, got dressed and even packed the car up with pillows, bags and the car seat. It felt like a crawl to get to 7:30 am. But when it did I was back on the phone and the nurse said "I’m sorry Miss, can you call back in an hour, all of our beds our full right now".
At this point worry started to set in. What if they postponed my induction to later in the day? They don’t let you eat after midnight, so I was really starting to get hungry and frustrated….not a good combination for me!
Then another thought entered my mind. What if they not only postponed my induction, what if they cancel it? This was not an option I was ready to handle. My husband had taken two weeks off of work to spend time with the baby and if the induction were moved to another date, he would have less time to bond with her.
Well, after another excruciating hour it was time to call the nurse again. I had the phone pressed against my check as I crossed all of my fingers and toes, hoping that she would tell me that they were ready for me and to come in.
The nurse put me on hold, not a good sign. I looked across the room at my husband and he gave me a hopeful glance. The head nurse got on the phone…again, not a good sign. She informed me that due to a lot of women going into labor the night before that they could not do the induction and they would have to cancel. She said she would call my doctor to let her know but I needed to call her office to schedule my appointment for the week.
Um…did she just say set an appointment? Why couldn’t I just set another date for the induction? Why did I have to go back into the office for another appointment? Stage five melt down in 5…4….3…2….1….
I was crying and not just a tear rolling down the check. I’m talking ugly face crying. Where your face gets distorted and you are snorting and snotting all over yourself. It was not a good moment for me. I was upset because I thought I was going to see my baby, I wouldn’t be pregnant anymore and my husband was losing precious vacation time with our baby.
My husband finally got me to settle down and we were forced to roll with the punches. I called my doctor’s office and made an appointment to see my doctor the next day. Not too bad, I thought. I bet I will go into the office and she would schedule me for the following day, worst case scenario the day after that.
I was sitting in the waiting room and trying to stay optimistic. Today was my mom’s birthday and I knew she was not so secretly wishing I would go into labor today. She wanted her granddaughter to share her birthday and I thought that would be special too.
They called me back and I sat on the table covered with the annoying paper, shifting around waiting for my doctor to come in.
I heard her voice down the hall and I knew she was headed for my room. The handle turned and I saw a big grin on her face. She said "I have great news"!
Awesome, I thought! "You can get me in tomorrow"?
"No" she said, "I got you in on Monday, which is great because it was going to be next Friday".
How is this good news? Is this a joke? Did she want me to cry? That was a week away from my original induction date! Just then, the door opened and I saw a familiar face. My mom came to my appointment. She took the morning off for her birthday and to support me at my appointment. She knew how disappointed I was that the induction was cancelled.
The doctor repeated everything she told me and my husband. Hearing it twice was like salt in the wound. The first thing my mom asked was if there were any "old wives’ tales we could try to get this going on our own. The doctor listed a few things like caster oil and walking and then we all sulked out of the office.
As they walked and I waddled to the parking lot we invited my mom to breakfast for her birthday. We had just reached the parking lot when my mom asked me if I would try caster oil if she bought it. I was a little hesitant since I had read online that it was a powerful laxative and I didn’t want a bad day to get worse by having that situation all day. But I was desperate, so I agreed to give it a try.
My mom turned around and went back into the hospital to their pharmacy to buy the caster oil. She was going to meet us at the diner with the first of the "old wives’ tales" I would try that week. And so began my exploratory journey of the "old wives’ tales".
Old Wives Tale #1: Caster Oil
I sat at the diner table still in shock that I had to wait another week. I ordered a stack of pancakes ready to drown my sorrows in maple syrup. Before I ate the delicious consolation prize I downed two tablespoons of caster oil. It was gross! It tasted very waxy like melted lip stick. I dry gagged as I took the last tablespoon. It truly was nasty but if it worked it would be worth it.
Hours passed and I waited for something to happen. I wanted contractions, labor pains, or maybe my water breaking. But my hopes were met with a rumbling in my stomach. We had planned to go to the mall and try the next "old wives’ tale": walking but I was afraid to leave the house. I ran to the bathroom and spent the afternoon on the porcelain throne.
The verdict was in and it was a fail. The only thing that worked about the caster oil was cleaning out my system. After nine months of constipation it was nice to have some relief but I would never try that again. I regretted opening that Pandora’s Box.

Old Wives’ Tale #2: Eggplant Parmesan
We have the most delicious Italian restaurant by our house. So, when I read about the eggplant parmesan "old wives’ tale" this seemed like a much better option than the failed caster oil! I got dressed up in the only maternity dress that still fit me and then my husband and I took our date night for Italian.
I am not in to veggies at all! I am very much a meat and potatoes kind of gal, so I didn’t know if I was going to like eggplant. However, it is breaded and paired with pasta and marinara sauce, which made it very yummy. I ate until I felt like I would pass out into a food coma. This I thought, should do the trick.
I had researched online and found many women that claimed that this dish would induce labor. I read reviews that claimed that anywhere from 8 hours to 48 hours after eating the eggplant parmesan that women had gone into labor. There was even an Italian restaurant that boasted that their eggplant parmesan was guaranteed to induce labor within 48 hours or they would give you a gift card. Needless to say, I was very hopeful.
I laid in bed that night waiting for labor signs. Hour after hour passed and each time I got up to make my bathroom trips I became less hopeful.
As the sun came up I started to write it off as a fail. But I needed to give this tale the entire 48 hours.
Well, 48 hours came and when nothing happened, I gave up. My contractions never got stronger or closer together. Just the same old false contractions I had been feeling for weeks.
Even though this made for a fun night out with my husband and I tried a delicious dish I never, this "old wive’s tale" is debunked.
Old Wives’ Tale #3: Walk the Walk
Next on my list was walking. I’m not talking about a stroll around the block either. I’m talking power walking. Since it was a very hot summer, I waited until the sun was setting and my husband and I took off for the park down the street and I walked the ½ mile trail. I walked about 2 miles at a pace that got my heart rate up. I felt stronger contractions and they were more frequent. Walking might actually work!
The next day I went to the galleria and I walked around each floor and up and down the stairs. Again, I had stronger contractions and they were more frequent. I followed this up with another evening walk around the park. I even tried the bonus "old wives’ tale" of walking with one foot on the curb and the other on the street. I read that this tilt might help the baby drop more. I felt silly doing it and my husband was worried that I would trip, so he made me stop doing the curb trick after a block or so.
Even though my contractions were stronger and the frequency increased, it did not result in labor.
Old Wives’ Tale #4: Swinging
As each day passed and I still had not gone into labor, I was ready to try one of the silliest "old wives’ tales" I had read….swinging. Yes, that’s right, swinging, as in the playground swing set.
I read online that multiple women swore by this tall tale. They said that they went to a swing set and would swing for 45 minutes or more and would pump back and forth vigorously.
I went to the park and mustered up the courage to sit on the swing. I must admit I was nervous that it might have a weight limit and I would crash to the ground. But after a couple of slow swings, I gained momentum and got a good pace going.
I felt very odd being a grown, pregnant woman flying back and forth. A grandmother was at the park with her grandson and they were swinging next to me. I wanted to give her an explanation for my odd behavior but my dignity checked out with the caster oil.
As my heart rate climbed, I felt stronger contractions but they never increased in frequency and after I stopped swinging, so did the contractions.
Another one bites the dust.

Old Wives’ Tale #5: Doing the Deed
I’ll make this short and sweet. At nine months pregnant the last thing I wanted to do was to be intimate. But after many websites claimed that this would help to ripen the cervix, I figured I might end this the same way it all started. All I will say is that it did not work….no details necessary.

Moral of the Story
After all of the crazy things I tried over the following week I came to my conclusion. As well meaning as the "old wives’ tales" are, they will not work unless you are ready to go into labor. If your baby and your body are ready, these little tricks might kick start your labor.
However, if it isn’t time, these things will just be odd, uncomfortable or embarrassing.
My advice is to let nature run its course and you will meet your baby on their terms. And believe me; they are well worth the wait.

Benefits of Staying Healthy During Pregnancy by Avoiding Unhealthy Habits

By: Nate Rodney

Unhealthy lifestyle during pregnancy is very dangerous to the development of baby before and after birth. It also destroys the health of the mother. It is therefore, essential to understand the benefits of staying healthy by avoiding certain unhealthy habits during pregnancy.

Things to be avoided

Apart from including proper nutritious diet, regular exercises and essential medications or vitamin supplements, a healthy lifestyle demands quitting of various unhealthy habits such as junk foods, smoking, drinking and substance abuse.

Junk foods: Junk foods including pies, cakes and burgers with excessive fats may affect the heart of the pregnant lady. Some studies also state that junk food raises the chances of miscarriage and obese children. It's, therefore, better to prevent taking such foods during pregnancy.

Smoking and staying around people who do: Toxic compounds associated with smoking damage the health of the unborn child and the mother. Even exposure to second-hand smoke effects the health badly. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid smoking and stay away from smokers during pregnancy.

Drinking alcohol: Drinking alcohol during pregnancy causes liver damage and many other serious health complications in the mother. Further, alcohol from bloodstream passes quickly to the fetus affecting its growth and development. Hence, encourage yourself to forgo parties and bars to escape from harmful consequences of alcohol.

Illicit or prescription drugs (without doctor's advice): Illicit drugs deteriorate the health of the mother and the unborn child. Many serious and fatal complications are developed during and after pregnancy if these hazardous substances are abused at this critical stage of life. Usage of the prescription drugs without doctor’s prescription may be harmful to the developing fetus and so, should be refrained.

Benefits of staying healthy

Staying away from the above mentioned practices assures a better health. It even promotes significant benefits to the mother as well as the child.

Saves mother and baby from infection causing microbes: Unhealthy habits like illicit drug use while pregnancy impairs immunity and rises the chances of anemia, blood and heart infections, skin infections, hepatitis and other infectious diseases. The onset of infections in the mother will be transferred to the fetus affecting its development. Being healthy by staying away from such dreadful habits and maintaining hygiene saves the mother and baby from infection causing microbes.

Avoids miscarriage and premature birth: Slowdown in the growth and development of the fetus due to smoking, drinking and substance abuse reduces the length of pregnancy leading to premature birth. However, miscarriage, premature birth and still birth associated with such habits can be prevented by staying healthy during pregnancy.

Lowers the risk of birth defects in new born: A pregnant woman habituated to drinking is more likely to give birth to a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), a condition that includes serious defects like facial deformities, heart problems, mental retardation, low birth weight and low birth rate. Inculcating a healthy lifestyle by preventing the exposure to smoking, recreational drugs and alcohol also reduces the risk of these birth defects.

Lowers the risk of drug addiction later in child's life: Drug addiction during pregnancy may genetically transfer the same habit to the child. Hence, avoiding drug addiction bypasses the risk of inherited drug addiction and associated physical and mental health issues such as learning disabilities, vision, speech or hearing defects, sleeping concerns, attention problems, behavioral issues like hyperactivity and so on in the child.

Now that you know the benefits of staying away from unhealthy habits during pregnancy, make sure that you lead a healthy lifestyle to protect your baby and yourself.

Home Birthing and Choosing Your Midwife and Team

By: Nyrie Roos

How home birthing can work for you?

Home birthing, as the term implies, is an option wherein your baby will greet the real world right in the comfort of your own home. However, not all mothers can choose to home birthing for one striking reason and that is if the mother is considered as high risk and needs special attention of doctors in a hospital setting. You can determine this or your pregnancy test results can help you determine if you are high risk or not. But if you have a healthy pregnancy, then there is no reason for you to experience home birthing. Once you are fit to do so, then some of the important factors that you need to keep in mind are the following:

• Constantly practice how to have a good breathing. Practicing your breathing through numerous breathing exercises can help you endure labor pains during child birth. In fact, it can help you relax as proper breathing can regulate the natural flow of oxygen in your body. The deep inhale and long exhale and how to hold your breathe during contractions can really help you during child birth. • Keep your focus during labor and delivery. To help you focus, you will then be directed to breathe properly. The intervals of your contractions including its frequency and intensity should be aided with a long abdominal type of breathing. • Stay relaxed as much as possible. Learn the different relaxation exercises to help you maintain your focus and stay relaxed. Drawing in a long and deep abdominal type of breathing while in labor pains and contractions can help you achieve relaxation. To do this, draw in air in four counts then draw out air when you reached the eight counts. See the rising and falling of your abdomen? If not, then you must be doing it incorrectly.

Aside from the three main factors that you need to keep in mind, you will also benefit from enrolling in a program that will teach you different techniques in breathing like the Bradley or Lamaze techniques. The first technique will mostly aid you in between your contractions and give you the most relaxation and rest while the latter technique is good for you to manage labor pains. However, another important factor to help you get through all these exercises is the support coming from your spouse or partner. But to give you support on other things, you have the midwife to rely upon.

How to choose your midwife and other support system?

There are actually three types of midwives—Lay Midwife, Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM). Each type of midwife can aid you in home births or delivery at a birthing center. However, each type has a certain set of qualifications that should meet your needs. For the lay midwives, they learned from years and years of experience in aiding mothers deliver their newborns into this world. They are self-taught and opted not to have certifications or accreditations from different midwife registries. They can also collaborate with a physician but they do not necessarily need a physician’s go signal.

Natural birthing is your choice as well as choosing the right midwife. So, if you want to learn more, visit www.givingbirthtoababyinfo.com Remember that you will be establishing a long working relationship with your midwife especially if you opt to receive midwife care on your prenatal stage, during pregnancy or even until your postpartum stage.

Easy to Forget

By: Jane Hull

The other day I was visiting a friend who had recently had a new baby, when I arrived and met the new little girl her mum asked me if I wanted to hold her, which of course I did. When I went to pick her up I found myself asking advice on how to hold her. I was so nervous because she was so tiny and fragile. Most of my friends have older children, so I don’t often get to spend time with friends with much younger babies.

Having had two children of my own who are now much older I expected to be able to jump in with both feet as an experienced mother and know exactly what I was doing, but when I got there I realised that you quickly forget what it’s like to have a new baby.

When I was holding her I could not believe how small she was and that my babies had been that small when they were born. I knew that after a couple of days with a new baby your confidence grows and you are not so nervous about handling them. But if you are out of practise for a while, you feel you have gone right back to the beginning.

Then I remembered that when I had had my second child 4 years after my first, I asked the midwife in hospital how often I need to change her nappy, the midwife looked confused and said when she needs it. I felt really silly that I already had a child and that I really should know what to do with a new baby.

The same happened the other day when I was looking after my friend’s son for a few minutes, he is 2 and I was going to order a coffee and toast in a cafe. He would not stand with me in the queue, if I picked him up he tried to squirm out of my arms, all he wanted to do was run about. I had totally forgotten how difficult the simplest tasks are when you have a toddler.

Of course I have realised since that there are so many people who feel like this, they forget so quickly what it is like and a new baby grows up so quickly you hardly notice the changes from what they need when they are first born. I guess forgetting some of those details, particularly the difficult ones is what makes you go on to have more children, if you remembered you might think twice!

I have children myself and I write about products and tips which are useful to parents, they cover making life less fuss and more fun, saving time and getting out and about with young babies and children. Some of my articles are interesting but they try to have a bit of fun and laughter about them.

Baby Blanket Versus Travel Wrap

By: Jane Hull

Most parents would not even consider a travel wrap, they are familiar with the baby blankets and that is what they assume they will need when they have a baby. However, people who have discovered them have realised they are not just a gimmick invented so you will feel obliged to spend money on yet another baby product, but actually a really great improvement of the standard blanket.

There are several wraps that I am aware of on the market but the particular travel wrap that I am familiar with is fantastic because it has so many uses and solves so many problems. I think people feel put off by the fact that they will need to spend a bit more and that a cheap baby blanket will do the same job, but of course that is simply not the case.

The travel wrap fits into a buggy or car seat or anything with a three or five point harness; it is shaped so it lays flat within the seat. The straps thread through the holes so the wrap almost becomes part of the seat, as soon as you are ready to go out on a journey you simply but the baby or child into the seat and strap them in as you would normally.

If you then need the blanket because it’s chilly you can wrap them up, of course if you do not need it you can simply leave it unwrapped. You don’t need to prepare when you go out because the travel wrap is always there ready to go. The wrap incorporates a hood which means you can also keep their head warm and avoid the need to buy hats. Of course the additional benefits are that, because it covers the seat it protects it, so any mess or spills can easily be removed by taking the wrap out and washing it, there is no need to wash or scrub down the buggy or car seat.

The other great benefit is that the child is sitting on the travel wrap so it is impossible for it to fall off and get dirty or lost. You don’t need to dress your child in outdoor clothing such as coats or snowsuits, because when they are wrapped they are completely covered and it keeps them warm all the way round, not just their front. Therefore saving you even more time and making going out a joy instead of a chore.

Of course if you find a travel wrap too expensive you could always ask friends and family to contribute towards it or look around for second hand options. It’s something that you will get a lot of use from and of course you can always hand it down to other children you may have or to someone else when your baby has grown out of it.

I have children myself and I write about products and tips which are useful to parents, they cover making life less fuss and more fun, saving time and getting out and about with young babies and children. Some of my articles are interesting but they try to have a bit of fun and laughter about them.

Egg Donation Fertility Option

By: Kevin Schmiterson

As a woman ages, her ovaries make less eggs and the eggs that she already has tend to grow weaker making it difficult to conceive a child. Couples can choose egg donation when other fertility options have failed or when the inability to conceive is directly related to the woman's eggs or ovaries. Egg donation occurs when a woman donates her eggs to a reproduction facility in order to assist with processes including in-vitro fertilization. The facility takes the eggs and fertilizes them in a lab. Once the eggs are fertilized, they are then placed in the woman's uterus. Egg donation plays an important role in successful fertility treatments.

Women living in the Overland Park, KS area can easily contribute by donating eggs for a good cause. Each egg donated gives a couple experiencing infertility the chance to achieve the goal of starting a family. The use of donor eggs has been popular among in-vitro fertilization for over 25 years. Egg donation may be used in conjunction with sperm donation when necessary. It is just one of the many ways that couples can achieve pregnancy in lieu of infertility problems. Sperm may come from a donor or from the woman's husband when egg donation is used.

Donors are screened during the egg donation process to ensure that there is no existence of severe medical problems. Everything from blood type to drug use and the presence of STDs is checked by the facility that collects the eggs. The person that donates the eggs typically does not have to pay anything. Either the facility or the couple pays for the testing procedures as well as the donation of the eggs. A psychological evaluation is also typically used to limit the presence of emotional or mental problems. Physical and mental testing is an important process in egg donation selection.

Although women that agree to donate eggs undergo testing, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) keeps their information private at all times. Donators never have to worry about information regarding their physical or mental evaluation or even their ethnicity being released to someone they do not know. However, the screening process is necessary to ensure that a child will not suffer from STDs, severe deformities, or other potential serious health issues. Once a woman has provided a physical and mental evaluation, she may donate her eggs so that a couple may have a chance at a successful pregnancy.

Check-out information on how egg donation is one of the most successful fertility treatment options available to couples.

Acid Reflux Symptoms in Pregnant Women

By: Lynn Jones

In this article we will look at some acid reflux symptoms in pregnant women.

The reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, causing irritation and burning sensation in the chest, known as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). .
There are several reasons that can cause acid reflux and increased acid flow is related to a combination of our diet, lifestyle and obesity. This condition can affect both men and women and acid reflux symptoms are generally the same in men and women. .However, pregnant women are more susceptible to acid reflux, especially in the second and third trimesters..

Acid reflux is a common condition in pregnant women. Nearly 20 percent of women experience heartburn and indigestion in the first three months of pregnancy. The number jumps to 45 percent in the second quarter and about 70 percent in the last three months. There may be several reasons for this disease, the increased hormone level is one of the most common causes. This is mainly because of the increased levels of the hormone progesterone during pregnancy, affects muscle function, in charge of closing the esophagus.

A weakening of this muscle allows back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus causing heartburn and acid reflux. Another cause of acid reflux during pregnancy is increasing pressure on the stomach due to the developing embryo.

The developing fetus causes a pressure in the upper digestive tract, forcing stomach contents into the esophagus. Now that you know what the causes of acid reflux symptoms in pregnant women, on to the symptoms of acid reflux in pregnant women.

Acid reflux symptoms in women are usually the same as anyone else suffering from this condition. The reflux of stomach acid can damage the lining of the esophagus and may cause irritation and discomfort.

Some Common Acid Reflux Symptoms in Pregnant Women:

  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Acidity
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Regurgitation

These are some of the acid reflux symptoms in pregnant women. Overall, women experience nausea and vomiting in the first three months of pregnancy, followed by heartburn and indigestion in the second and third trimesters.

Generally, acid reflux symptoms experienced by pregnant women are mild, however it can be severe in some cases, causing much pain and discomfort. So, here are some tips to keep pregnant women away from acid reflux.

There are a number of steps can be taken to prevent acid reflux and indigestion during pregnancy. Changes in diet, sleep positions and lifestyle can help alleviate pain and discomfort caused by acid reflux without taking drugs that may harm the developing fetus. This is what you can do to avoid the problem of heartburn and acid reflux. There are several foods that cause acid reflux or trigger it… Here are some tips to help you avoid all these foods that cause acid reflux and help you stay away from this annoying condition.

The consumption of small meals throughout the day instead of three large, can help prevent acid reflux greatly. Drink plenty of water between meals helps to clean all the acid in the esophagus. In general it was observed that the problem of acid reflux worsens during sleep. This is due to a reclining position allows acid to flow more easily into the esophagus. Sleeping with your head elevated a few inches prevents stomach acid regurgitating.

When do pregnancy test?

By: Christine Lemendson

For many women planning pregnancy raises the question: when you can do a pregnancy test to see two cherished stripes? Manufacturers of tests, doctors, and friends are advised not to do the tests before the delay. Let's look at why and try to calculate the probability of a positive pregnancy test, depending on the DPO (days after ovulation).

For our calculations we take as a basis for a pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 25 mUI. The test reacts to the presence of the pregnancy hormone hCG in the blood of women. When the sensitivity of 25 mUI test can show positive results if the hormone in the urine of women of hCG exceeded this level, ie is above the level of 25 mUI. You should know that the hormone hCG appears immediately after the implantation of the embryo in the uterine wall first in the blood, and later in the urine of women and, in turn, implantation occurs 7-10 days after ovulation. But at the same time, be aware that hormone levels do not jump immediately after implantation to 25 mUI, but rises gradually, increasing every 24-48 hours in 2 times.

Suppose that implantation has occurred on the 7th day after ovulation and start from the fact that in this day hCG "jumped" to 2 mUI. The following day, hCG levels doubled and amounts to "whole" 4 mUI. At 9 DPO again doubling and 8 mUI. Although the pregnancy has already occurred, but for the test with a sensitivity of 25 mUI hormone levels are still very low, so the test will still be negative. Only on the 11th day after ovulation hCG levels for the first time crosses the border in 25 mUI and pregnancy test can be the first time to show a weak second band. Thus in our calculations, we ignore the fact that the content of hCG in the urine may be much lower than in blood, and every woman has this level of an individual.

Now imagine that the implantation did not occur at the 7th SPE, but only on 10th (also the norm!). This means that we estimate first stripes can be seen only at 14 DPO. Here we are getting to the definition of delay, and answers to frequently asked question: "How many days can do a pregnancy test?". Normally, the length of the second phase is about 14 days and this is why manufacturers recommend tests to test for pregnancy only after a delay, ie, the earliest at 15 DPO.

Can You Really Choose Your Baby's Gender?

By: Michael Lepore

Even though there are lots of arguments over just how ethical it really is to choose the gender of your baby before they're born, the very fact remains that we now have various all natural techniques you may use which will improve the probability of having a baby of a specific gender. The ethics of it are at your discretion and even though no technique is 100% accurate, there are some things that you can test that may help you improve your possibilities for having either a boy or a girl.

These types of techniques are focused around the proven fact that the sperm which carry Y chromosomes (which are essential for a boy) are quite different from the sperm which carry the X chromosome (which are essential for a girl). By simply being familiar with these kinds of differences, along with choosing the best techniques, you will be creating a natural environment in which one particular type of sperm will be able to outperform the other and arrive at the main destination first, therefore determining your baby's gender.

Why don't we have a look at what you can do.

1) The Best Diet Plan for determining you baby's gender:

Y sperm need an environment which is alkali in nature, whereas X sperm require more acid. The actual PH levels of your entire body determine how heavy the cervical discharge is in addition to whether or not the desired sperm are likely to make it through with success. In order to have a girl, you'll want to eat a diet which is abundant in calcium and magnesium. In order to have a boy, a diet abundant in potassium and sodium is essential.

2) The Best Timing for determining you baby's gender:

The timing of when you have intercourse will significantly have an effect on determining the gender of your baby. Since the Y sperm have to get through to the egg cell as fast as possible, it is very important to time intercourse on the day that you ovulate to improve your probability of having a boy. They will be in a position to reach the egg cell while they are still viable.

But in order to have a girl, you must allow the Y sperm time to die off, allowing the more resilient X sperm to move ahead. Because of this you will want to time intercourse to somewhere around two to three days just before ovulation. This provides the X sperm more than sufficient time for it to get through to the egg cell.

3) The best Position for determining you baby's gender:

The positioning you decide on with regard to intercourse may also decide the sex of your baby. Once again, we fall back to the differences between sperm. The Y sperm have got to get through to their destination in as little time as possible. Which means that they must get discharged as close to the cervix as possible, shortening the journey they need to take to the egg cell. Positions which provide for deep penetration are perfect.

For you to have a girl, you'll want to ensure it is more difficult for the Y sperm to arrive at their target in timely manner. Which means that positions whereby shallow penetration is attained are necessary. Typically the sperm is going to be deposited further away from the cervix, offering the X sperm the opportunity they need to arrive at the egg cell, as well as enabling the Y sperm to die off.

Clearing The Air- Baby Sling Recalls

By: Robin Johnson

Perhaps you have heard about the million+ baby sling recalls? Well I want to clear the air about about them. The type of sling that was recalled is an Infantino bag sling. It's no wonder why they were recalled. The basic design of a bag sling was flawed from the beginning. The bag is too deep and material would have nowhere else to go but right in babies face. Another major problem with a bag sling is that babies head could easily become slouched over and their chin would rest on their chest. We now know that this blocks babies already small airway passages and they could potentially suffocate. The fact is that no other baby sling should fall into this category.

It is important to realize that recalls on baby products are common place. Baby cribs, bassinetts, playpens, strollers, each one seems to have a new category of products that are unsafe conveniently after the consumer finds out for themselves. Rather than placing a stigma on these products they simply fix the malfunctioning components of it, or discontinue that model or brand and take it off of the shelves. Many have seemed to misinterpret The Consumer Product Safety Commissions (CPSC) advice which went on to state:

CPSC recommends that parents and caregivers make sure the infant's face is not covered and is visible at all times to the sling's wearer. If nursing the baby in a sling, change the baby's position after feeding so the baby's head is facing up and is clear of the sling and the mother's body. Parents and caregivers should be vigilant about frequently checking their baby in a sling.

If you continue to read the CPSC warning you will see that in the past 20 years there has been a total of 14 deaths linked to baby slings. A very unfortunate number indeed but this number hardly seems size able compared to the estimated 43 deaths a year connected to cribs and playpens alone. Not to mention that the majority of the infant deaths in a sling were babies that were physically predisposed to problems low birth weight, premature, and sick just to name a few. So if your baby falls into one of these categories it is important to pay that much more attention to them.

Babywearing has been practiced around the world for centuries, so baby slings are hardly a new idea. It is virtually the same thing as holding a baby in your arms except more comfortable. Just like you pay attention to a baby that you are holding in your arms the same formalities apply when your baby is being held in a sling. Be aware at all times of your precious bundle that you are wearing. Make sure they are comfortable, make sure they can breathe, don't let them become encased in fabric, don't let them hang upside down, etc. Never put your baby in a sling unless you are sure you are wearing it correctly and that baby is positioned correctly. When you are testing out your sling for the first time, make sure they are content. A fussy baby is much harder to position and it is also hard to tell if they are uncomfortable in the sling or just upset. In the end you are the parent and if you feel safe using a baby sling than great. If you don't think your baby is safe follow your intuition.

What is Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)?

By: Bruce Angarsky

Cv's is an accepted and verified method of prenatal prognosis. During the CVS test, a little sample associated with cells (referred to as chorionic villi) is obtained from the placenta in which it connects to the walls of the uterus. Chorionic villi are very small parts of the actual placenta that are created from the fertilized egg cell, so they have the identical genes since the fetus.

For those who have certain threat factors, you might be offered Resumes as a way to detect birth flaws during early pregnancy. Whether or not you choose to have the test is up to you.
How's the test performed?

CVS demands appropriate hereditary counseling, including a detailed discussion regarding the hazards and benefits of the procedure.

At the time of initial discussion and counseling, an ultrasound exam exam is going to be performed to confirm gestational age (the event stage with the embryo) and the area of the placenta. This is accomplished so that Resumes can be performed on the appropriate gestational grow older (which is usually 10-12 weeks in the woman's final menstrual period).

There's two ways to collect chorionic villi from the placenta: with the vagina or perhaps through the belly.
To collect tissues through the vaginal area , a speculum will be inserted (in the same way as a Smear test). Then the very slender, plastic tube is put up the vagina and to the cervix. With ultrasound exam, the pipe is guided up to the actual placenta, where a tiny sample is slowly removed.
To collect cells through the abdomen , a slim needle is inserted from the woman's stomach to the placenta, much like amniocentesis.

The test of chorionic villi will be sent to the lab in which the cells are usually grown in the special water and analyzed a few days afterwards. Culture outcomes will be available within 7-10 nights. Your physician will directly inform you with the results.

Exactly what diseases or perhaps disorders can easily CVS determine?

CVS can help identify genetic problems such as Down syndrome or other innate diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease as well as sickle cell condition. Since the method also identifies the sex of the fetus, it can help recognize disorders which can be linked to 1 sex (including certain types of muscular dystrophy which happen most often in males). CVS doesn't detect open neural tube defects. When you have CVS, you might like to consider creating a blood AFP test later during pregnancy to display for neural tube flaws.

What are the great things about CVS?

Cv's can be done previously in pregnancy compared to amniocentesis, and answers are usually obtained within 10 days. Getting this sort of information earlier allows a lady to make choices in the beginning stage of her pregnancy. If a girl chooses in order to terminate the pregnancy after receiving abnormal analyze results, her pregnancy termination is going to be safer as compared to if the lady waits regarding amniocentesis results.

Do you know the potential problems of CVS?

CVS may carry a slightly higher risk of miscarriage as compared to amniocentesis, since the process is done during the early pregnancy. An infection may also be the complication. Rare cases associated with limb penile deformation in babies have been documented, especially when Resumes was done prior to 9 months.
Who needs to be tested?

Your doctor can tell you about your likelihood of birth defects and the tests that are available. Each pregnancy differs from the others, and some threat may be concerned. Only you and your partner can choose whether or not you need to have this test. Testing needs to be offered to:
- Pregnant women who will be 35 or more mature on their due date (the risk of giving birth with a chromosomal problem including Down symptoms increases with the age of the girl).
- Couples that already have were built with a child using a birth deficiency or use a family history associated with certain birth defects.
- Expecting mothers with other abnormal genetic analyze results.

These day there are large amount of methods to identify perhaps the many dangerous and serious diseases. One is CVS - Chorionic villus sampling. More information you can get here.

Ultrasound scans have been utilised in numerous pregnancies and no warning signs of threats and also problems have ever been documented. All two dimensional, 3D, and 4D baby scans utilize same kind and also concentration of ultrasound. The sound waves are aimed into the tummy to form shots to get displayed on the computer monitor.

Mother's Gift

By: Robin Johnson

The best gift a mother can give her child is a cocktail of nutrients that allows their baby to thrive. Flu fighting, immune boosting, brain food. Conveniently enough we mothers have this liquid gold that benefits babies and mothers alike. Whats more is it's free, easily accessible, always fresh, and always perfect for baby. Along with its countless other benefits breastfeeding helps baby and mother bond. Mothers benefit from breastfeeding as well. Baby weight is shed faster, uterus contracts to normal size sooner as if that's not enough good stuff breastfeeding also decreases the likelihood that mother will develop breast cancer later in life.

With all of the benefits breastfeeding provides, you may wonder why some mothers have issues at all. Leaking, engorged breasts, sore nipples with calluses that can strike a match will sometimes consume us and frustrate us to know end. A frustrated mommy means a frustrated baby. Add a baby that can't quite latch, stitches that feel ablaze with fire every time you pee, (and God forbid wipe) plus a pinch of sleep stir briskly and you begin to see how sometimes our emotions get the best of us.

It's important to realize that you are not alone. The swelling will go down, and you will be able to sit sans 'donut seat' sometime soon. Ask friends and family who have been down the path of mommy-hood and breastfed babies. Learn as much as you can about breastfeeding before giving birth if at all possible so you can remember the tricks of the trade. Lactation nurses will become your heroes in disguise. The single best resource you can always count on is La Leche League International. They have spread nationwide and chances are you can locate a chapter near you full of helpful moms who are more than happy to get you on the path to breastfeeding.

Learn how to position baby when breastfeeding. There are many different ways that mothers use. Some will pick one position or do a mixture of all of them. Breastfeeding is a beautiful natural act that you should never be ashamed or embarrassed of. However breastfeeding discreetly when you are out in public not only keeps creeps from staring at your milk jugs, but can make you feel more confident and of course covered. There are many products that loosely cover babies face and your chest that you may find suitable. Don't feel like you have no other options though.

If you have a baby sling you can carry baby hands free and breastfeed at the same time. This is super convenient to not only cover baby up but now you are not limited. No more feeling tied to a bench at the park, or being sequestered in a dirt ridden, smelly bathroom corner at the store, walk around while baby eats. Run for that matter. Ok so don't run that is not safe or smart. Plus the every step you jolt down could cause babies jaws to dig into your nipples and that would hurt. So don't do that. But shop in the store, walk around the fair, sink your toes in the sandy beach, mountain climb (again kidding). Be mom. A superhero who doesn't where a cape, only because they can't find a phone booth to change into.

Yaz: A Potentially Deadly Birth Control Pill

By: Roger Mcgrady

With the advent of modern medicine and pharmaceutical sciences, contraception became increasingly
available to women. Pharmaceutical companies presently make billions of dollars producing
contraceptives for women who want to take control of their reproductive health. While most
contraceptives do prevent unwanted pregnancies, a number of these are harmful – with some being
downright lethal with increased dosages – and are being sold to millions of women in the United States
alone. One of these harmful contraceptives is YAZ.

A Killer Drug Enters the Market

In 2001, pharmaceutical company Bayer received FDA approval for its contraceptive dubbed "Yasmin",
which contained drospirenone and ethynylestradiol as active ingredients. Drospirenone is a synthetic
progestin – a hormone which, coupled with estrogen (the primary female sex hormone), has been found
to be the most effective method of hormonal contraception. Ethynylestradiol, on the other hand, is a
synthetic form of estrogen used in almost all modern formulations of oral contraceptive pills. YAZ, a
newer version of Yasmin, was introduced and approved by the FDA in 2006. Since then, Yasmin and YAZ
have become one of the most popular brands of contraceptives being sold.
As a birth control pill, Yasmin/YAZ was proven to have 99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy,
treating premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and treating moderate acne in women age 14 years
old and above.

However, the side effects of the drug proved to be more serious than its benefits, so much so that by
2009 there were already 125 lawsuits filed against YAZ manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The
number continued to grow as more women fell victim to YAZ and to its deceptive advertisements. The
FDA issued Bayer a warning letter for its commercials that promised purported benefits of the drug,
which were not proven during its clinical trials. The advertisements also downplayed the side effects of
YAZ in an effort to save the drug from being pulled from the market. The side effects, however, were far
too serious to be ignored and have resulted in YAZ falling under FDA’s scrutiny.
Clinically-proven Side Effects of YAZ

Two clinical trials were made to determine YAZ’s efficacy: the first is the contraception and moderate
acne clinical trial, and the second is the PMDD clinical trial. The clinical trials reported the following side
effects from continuous use of YAZ:

- Headache/migraine
- Menstrual irregularities
- Vomiting/Nausea
- Breast tenderness/pain
- Mood swings
- Menstrual irregularities
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Decreased libido
- Weight gain

All of these and more were reported by women who used YAZ. Careful study of YAZ’s side effects
revealed that the drug can alter levels of potassium in the blood as well as damage the heart, leading to
life threatening effects that include:

- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Blood clots
- Liver damage
- Anaphylactic shock
- Cervical cancer
- Pulmonary embolism
- Gallbladder disease

Increasing Awareness

With hundreds of women falling victim to YAZ, it is imperative for women and men alike to ensure that
they are aware of the harmful effects of this contraceptive. Women especially, must educate themselves
about the drugs they take; they can take advantage of the reliable medical information over the internet
regarding drugs being sold commercially. Awareness and information are just some of the preventive
actions that can be taken to ensure that no killer drugs are for sale in shelves nationwide.
